Meeting more midwives!!!! All but one I had never met until today!! Elizabeth is right behind me in this photo. I have been fortunate to be with her each year that I’ve been in Kenya. She lives VERY deep in the bush!!! This year I traveled to her instead of her riding on the back of a motorcycle for 3 hrs to Narok. She has been teaching her local midwives what she learned last year; umbilical cord burning & a modified version of neonatal resuscitation. My heart is so filled with pride for these beautiful women!!! I am already planning my next trip! … See MoreSee Less
Midwives!! This is Ngutia, a Maasai midwife in Narok County. She has just delivered a 10th baby for a local woman. She took me to meet the mama & baby. I am so beyond honored. It is the Maasai tradition for the postpartum mama to stay in her hut and let the neighbor women care for her & her family for TWO MONTHS!! The ladies cook, clean, wash clothes & care for her older children the entire time.
